TARAH BUTTNER
Incoherently Coherent
by Bower Collective
This collaborative project explores the inherent paradox of human connection: how our deepest relationships simultaneously unite and isolate us. Like bower birds meticulously collecting blue objects, humans gather and mirror each other's mannerisms, phrases, and behaviours through sustained connection.
As shared languages and gestures multiply between connected individuals, they create a powerful bond—almost a unified entity—while simultaneously establishing boundaries that remain impenetrable to outsiders. These intimate relationships develop their own exclusive territories of understanding, creating spaces that are both profoundly connecting and inevitably isolating.
The work invites viewers to examine their own participation in these dynamics and consider: To whom are we coherent? What parts of ourselves have we borrowed from others? If we always remain partially unintelligible to some, perhaps we should embrace rather than resist the depth of our most meaningful connections.
